Multicultural Children’s Book Day & If You Were Me and Lived In… Book Review
I am excited to take part in the 2018 Multicultural Children’s Book Day #ReadYourWorld. Exposing students to books that have characters from multicultural backgrounds is extremely important. For English Language Learners, it allows them to see characters like themselves in the books that they read. This includes characters navigating living in a new culture and characters that speak more than one language.
As a part of this celebration, I am reviewing a set of books by Carole P. Roman. I received four books from the If You Were Me and Lived In….. A child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World These books introduce young children to countries around the world. Each book in the series tells children about what it would be like to live in a different country. The books show them famous locations and landmarks, give them examples of vocabulary words in the countries main language, and share examples of everyday life. My main critique is that some of the illustrations have a computer generated feel to them. The pictures show the main vocabulary introduced on each page which is helpful for English Language Learners.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
